WHAT BAPTISTS BELIEVE
and
Why They Believe It

CHAPTER II

THE ATONEMENT

Baptists believe in the atonement made by Christ as the only basis of salvation, the only means of reconciliation, the only ground of justification. Man is by nature a sinner, guilty, condemned, lost, and but for the atonement made by Christ, helpless and hopeless.

God is holy and just and must punish sin, is Almighty and able to punish sin, he cannot lie and has said that sin shall be punished; but God is also merciful, hence a willing, all-sufficient substitute is provided, and Jesus "bore our sins in his own body." God "made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin, that we might be made the righteousness of God in him." "Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time." "Being justified fully by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God, to declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus." The law is not made void, but through faith we establish the law. Jesus kept, made honorable, magnified and satisfied the law, becoming our accepted substitute, his righteousness, his right-doing, is imputed to us by faith and so we through him have kept the law. He took the sinner's place, bore his sins, met the penalty, and offers the sinner a child's place, and lets the sinner, who trusts him go free.

Justice is not bribed nor cheated but fully sustained, and God is still just though he justifies the believer in Christ. Because Jesus has rendered perfect satisfaction by his life and atoning sacrificial death, God says, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." Here is the sinner's only hope, Jesus and his atonement, "In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins."

He must not, dares not trust anything else. His penance, church, baptism, the Lord's Supper, not even his repentance and faith, but only Jesus. Baptists believe that no man cometh to God except through Jesus Christ.

Venture on him, venture freely,
Let no other trust intrude.
None but Jesus, none but Jesus,
Can do helpless sinners good.

About the Issels Foundation

The ISSELS FOUNDATION, INC. is a non profit, U.S. tax exempt, charitable organization. The U.S. Internal Revenue Service has designated the ISSELS FOUNDATlON a 501 (c) (3) organization with Federal Tax ID #65-0048212.

In 1987 the Issels Foundation was established by llse Marie lssels, whose late husband Josef M. Issels, M.D., was a world renowned leader in the development of a holistic, integrative therapeutic system for the treatment of patients with advanced cancers that had failed to respond to standard approaches. In 1951, Dr. Issels founded the first hospital specializing in the treatment of conventionally "incurable" cancer patients, subsequently treating more than 15,000 patients for months at a time. Over decades, he demonstrated that conventional anticancer treatments could be successfully combined with unconventional treatments to restore health in even far advanced cases. His use of immunobiological therapies, including cancer vaccines, allowed coherent treatment of the cancer patient as a whole person, body and mind, above and beyond efforts to manage the cancer itself. This treatment program became known as the Issels Treatment®.

As Dr. Issels' co-worker for four decades, Mrs. Issels was daily confronted by the extreme suffering of terminal cancer patients. She also witnessed the improvement of many of these patients through the Issels Treatment, even though they could not be helped any more by standard managements. A remarkable number of these "incurable" cancer patients achieved long term, complete remissions and were able to lead normal, healthy, cancer-free lives of up to 53 years follow-up.

Global Justice Events in London: July
Please send details of forthcoming events to events@oneworld.net.

Inside Job
* Mark Galloway of the International Broadcasting Trust has reminded members that Channel 4 has continued its policy of "ungeoblocking" key programmes so they can be watched around the world. Its documentary, Sri Lanka's Killing Fields, which was shown last month in an 11pm slot, was watched by 800,000 people in the UK and downloaded by 250,000 people around the world.

The Trust's research report, Outside the Box, which looks at international television coverage last year and examines ways in which international content can achieve greater impact with audiences, can be downloaded from the IBT website.

* A chance this week to catch up on some excellent films, in case you missed them first time around: Benda Bilili, an exuberant, life-affirming documentary about a band of disabled Congolese street musicians; Inside Job, a brilliant documentary about the financial meltdown; The First Grader, feature about a Mau Mau veteran who fights bureaucracy and prejudice to join a class of six-year-olds because he is determined to learn to read and write; Fire in Babylon, how the West Indies beat England at cricket, contextualised within the racism and stereotypes of the time; A Small Act, a quiet but heartwarming documentary about a bright Kenya pupil who is helped by an anonymous Swedish donor to continue his education: he eventually traces her and in inspired in turn to set up his own organisation to help others like him; and Pray The Devil Back to Hell, how Liberian women rose in protest against continuing war in Liberia.

* Among July's highlights is Shubbak, described as "the capital's first ever celebration of contemporary culture from across the Arab world". It features film, music, theatre, dance, literature, art, architecture, lectures and discussion. Says Mayor Boris Johnson: "London is a global city in which Arab culture has played a significant part over the centuries - the word 'Trafalgar' even originates from the Arabic language. This festival is a unique chance for Londoners to glimpse the breadth and excellence of contemporary Arab culture and its influence on London's cultural scene today. At a time of remarkable political and social change, Shubbak marks an exciting moment between artists in the capital and across the Arab world. I have no doubt that it will stimulate, delight and surprise audiences."
+ The Arab Spring comes to London

* Upcoming climate change events include Chris Huhne on The work and upcoming initiatives of the Department of Energy and Climate Change; Dr Cameron Hepburn discussing Emerging Markets and Climate Change; Business Perspectives on Investing in Energy and Carbon Management: Understanding the Implications for Business and Policy and Zero Carbon Britain Day.
